The natural shape for a center-channel speaker creates many design issues. It typically needs to be short and wide, so as to fit comfortably above or below a TV screen, and not too deep. Yet it also needs to have wide horizontal dispersion and to be capable of strong output down to at least 80 Hz or so, because surround soundtracks tend to have as much as 60 percent of their total energy in the center channel. Add to all that the challenge of building center speakers whose sound melds seamlessly with that of our signature MartinLogan electrostats, and you can understand how ours had to be just what they are—innovative, extraordinarily high-performance designs that set a new sonic standard for the category.
